A Cartography of a Practice in Becoming
Group Show - Milano Design Week 2026 - Ordine Architetti PPC della Provincia di Milano, Via Solferino 17, Milan
Presented by Communal Matters as part of Ordine Aperto

Communal Matters took part in Ordine Aperto, a group exhibition hosted by the Ordine e Fondazione dell’Ordine degli Architetti PPC di Milano during Milano Design Week 2026. Bringing together selected projects across architecture, design, landscape and research, the exhibition opened a space to reflect on how contemporary practice moves across formats, scales and forms of engagement.
Within this context, Communal Matters presented A Cartography of a Practice in Becoming: an experimental diagram conceived not as a fixed representation, but as a provisional device to trace how the practice unfolds, connects and disperses over time. Rather than organising content linearly, the cartography mapped relations between research trajectories, situated activations, collaborations and public programmes.
The diagram was accompanied by a series of publications that retrace Communal Matters’ past activations, expanding from them rather than documenting them. These printed materials do not stabilise the work into a closed archive; instead, they extend each activation into another temporal and spatial condition, where fragments, traces and reflections continue to circulate and generate new connections.
Together, diagram and publications articulate a tension between abstraction and situatedness: on one side, the attempt to hold the practice as a relational structure; on the other, its continuous grounding in specific actions, encounters and contexts.
At the centre of the cartography, Communal Matters emerges both as a point of convergence and as an open field in continuous reconfiguration; a practice defined not by fixed outputs, but by its capacity to remain in relation and in becoming.
